Abstract
National policies in health care concentrate on increasing the citizens’ health and well-being, reducing inequality, improving availability in health services and increasing the client-oriented approach. The patient-oriented approach is also an essential priority in the strategy of the Central Finland Health Care District. The client-oriented approach and client involvement can be developed by utilizing the information produced by experts by experience. The purpose of the study was to examine the views of the experts by experience in Central Finland and present proposals in order to enhance the client-oriented approach in mental health services. The aim of the study was to produce information about the client-oriented approach in the mental health services in Central Finland. The study had a qualitative research approach. The data were collected with a questionnaire and a group interview from experts by experience who had utilized mental health services. Inductive content analysis was used as the method of analysis. Mental health services in Central Finland were not always seen as client-oriented. The key elements in the point of view of reinforcing client involvement were interaction, paying attention to the patient’s opinions, respecting their self-determination and creating a goal-oriented health care plan together with the patients, their families and various professional networks. Companionship was hoped from the professionals. Access to mental health services were found difficult and the information flow inadequate. Based on the results of this study, in order to enhance the client-oriented approach in mental health services, low-threshold and centralized services are required and the various services need to be flexibly and quickly accessible. Individually customized treatment enables the client-oriented approach in the best possible way.
